I thought this would be a good intro video to my sleep challenge. One would assume that on Monday, following your totally relaxing weekend that didn’t involve baseball games, tee-gall games, play dates, family outings, shopping in over-crowded malls, waiting up for the teenager, yard work, maybe a random trip the ER, or any of those other wonderfully stressful things that you NEVER have to do over the weekend, that you would be well rested. I mean after all, you slept in on Saturday, you slept in on Sunday and you were in bed with a relaxing glass of red by 9pm last night, right?

Needless to say, sleep is critical. Lack of sleep obviously leads to lethargy which results in poor performance at work. Poor performance at work is brought home in the form of stress which results in impatience and irritability with the spouse and family. And let’s face it, nothing provokes premature aging like an angry spouse and an unhappy child.

A majority of the regenerative bio-chemical reactions that take place in the human body happen while you sleep. So if you’re not sleeping, there is no regeneration. That’s not good.

A recent study in the UK revealed that a lack of sleep over a mere 5 consecutive days results in noticeably more wrinkles. If just 5 days of poor sleep can make aesthetic changes to your face, imagine the toll it is taking on the inside of your body… then multiply that by a year, or 5 years of poor sleep quality.

What is 5-HTP?

Something else about this product – It’s not just a sleep aid, but a mood support as well. It contains 5-HTP.

5-HTP is a precursor to serotonin which is known as the happy neurotransmitter. You’re probably familiar with Prozac or Citolopram or one of several SSRIs on the market today. SSRI stands for Select Serotonin Re-Uptake Inhibitor.

What does this mean? Basically what it says, but I’ll explain. Like all neurotransmitters, serotonin is a very large molecule. That means it’s very expensive for your body to manufacture, it takes a lot of energy and raw materials. So, in an effort to be as efficient as it can be, your body recycles its serotonin. It will spit it out into the synapse to do it’s job and after it’s finished, the neuron that spit it out will suck it back in and reuse it. Efficiency.

What the SSRIs do is block the receptors that suck it back in. As a result, the serotonin will linger in the synapse and continue to do more work and pass more happy signals. This, in turn, results in more happy feelings and indirectly allocates more energy to the production of serotonin because if it lingers in the synapse too long, it will soon degrade and need to be replaced. 5-HTP is the key ingredient or building block to the replacement and manufacture of serotonin.

Do you need to be on an SSRI to get the benefits of 5-HTP? Absolutely not. In my opinion, 5-HTP is a more direct route to producing more serotonin than the prescription SSRIs.

Now here is what’s important… 5-HTP needs to be take on a daily basis to reap the rewards. And like SSRIs, it might be a month before you feel them working for you.

So my advice is this – take one ZzzTime about 30 minutes before bed EVERY night. On nights when you think you might need a bit more help, take two.


  1. L-Tryptophan – This is the stuff in turkey that makes you pass while sitting up following Thanksgiving dinner. It’s also what Jerry uses to drug his girlfriend so he can play with her vintage toy collection in one of my favorite Seinfeld episodes.

  2. Rhodiola Rosea – Also know as the “golden root.” It’s a natural anti-depressant. It’s known to reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) and boost brain function.

  3. Hops – Alcohol isn’t the only relaxation inducing trigger in beer. Hops take the edge off.

  4. Passion Flower – Used to treat anxiety, insomnia and depression. It’s also being used experimentally with ADHD children.

  5. L-Theanine – I first heard of this when I was living in Indonesia. It’s found in the tea leaves there and widely knows to reduce stress and anxiety. The Indo’s also believe it boosts immune function and is also recommended for cancer patients. 

  6. Melotonin – Can’t forget melotonin. It may not be as trending as some of the others, but it’s a classic for fighting insomnia because it works.

  7. Magnesium – Fights cortisol. By the way, too much cortisol leads to weight gain. Check my blog here on why I add magnesium to my HCG drops.

To clarify, you’ll feel the effects of the sleep aid immediately. Like the first night. You’ll be shocked. I have issues with sleep and I’ve tried the benzodiazepines and the Ambien, but I don’t want to get hooked on that stuff. It becomes a crutch. I don’t have to worry about that with ZzzTime.
