HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a hormone produced by the placenta of pregnant women. The sole purpose of the HCG hormone is to spark the metabolization of system fats to provide a 24/7 calorie source for the growing baby. For proper development, a baby in the womb requires a tremendous amount of calories and cannot rely solely on the nutrition of the mother. As a result, HCG is produced which acts on  a gland in our brain called the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus controls our thyroid which, in turn, controls our metabolism.

Typically, as a species, our bodies are hard-wired to retain calories in the form of fat for famine and long winters; conditions that rarely exist today. However, when a woman is pregnant, this physiology gets flipped upside down. This was first observed by Dr. A.T.W Simeon in the 1940’s. Dr. Simeon did a lot of humanitarian work in third world countries and was astonished by the fact that very malnourished women could still give birth to health, full-weight babies. The reason for this is the HCG hormone. The HCG hormone is the “key” to unlocking our fat stores, thus putting up to 4000 calories per day in the blood stream for the growing baby. In the absence of a pregnancy, the HCG hormone can be supplemented with the same results. Rather than these calories going to the baby, the dieter is able to use them as their own, thus sustaining themselves on their own stored fat. This then provides very rapid weight loss.

Can men be on the HCG diet?

Yes, the HCG diet works for men as well. In fact, men tend to lose more weight than women on the HCG diet. And yes, it’s safe. Pregnant women produce up to a million units per day of HCG. Most dieters are only supplementing 175 to 200 units of HCG per day. This is only a fraction of the amount of HCG that a pregnant woman and her growing baby are exposed.
