Dr. Oz Recommends the HCG Diet in First for Women Magazine
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG), is a hormone produced in the early stages of pregnancy. Its primary function during pregnancy is to stimulate the hypothalamus, a gland in the brain responsible for a variety of functions, including hunger and satiety, which moves essential fats and nutrients into the placenta. HCG is a water soluble hormone produced by the placenta to provide calories for the growing baby. It is part of a class of glycoprotein hormones, which include FSH (follicle stimulating hormones), TSH (thyroid stimulating hormones) and LH (luteinizing hormones). Additionally, HCG contains both alpha and beta amino acids.
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin reacts with LHCG receptors to support the corpus luteum during the early stages of pregnancy, causing it to release the hormone progesterone. Progesterone enriches the uterus, providing it with a thick lining of capillaries and blood vessels so that it can support the growing fetus. HCG is also thought to repel the immune cells of the mother, thus protecting the fetus during the first trimester. It has also been hypothesized that hCG may be a placental link for the development of local maternal immunotolerance. As an example, HCG enriched endometrial cells produce an increase in T cell apoptosis. Because of its similarity to LH, HCG can also be used clinically to induce ovulation in the ovaries in addition to facilitating testosterone production in the testes.
