5-HTP Mood Support as an Alternative to SSRIs

You’ve heard of the so called, “happy pills?” Well what are they, why do they make you happy and is there possibly a better, more natural alternative? Introducing 5-HTP, a natural alternative and potential compliment to SSRIs.

All “happy pills” are some sort of Selective Seretonin Re-uptake Inhibitor (SSRI). These are your citrolaprams, prozacs, celexas, and the list goes on and on.You can click here for a full list of all the SSRIs. Each big pharma company has their own patented high-dollar version that all do the same thing. But if they all do the same thing, why do they all get a patent? Because they pay for it, that’s why.

They use the same active site common to all SSRIs, tweak the inactive site and viola, the latest anti-depressant has been born. It’s not a question of which is better, it’s a questions of which has the largest marketing budget and biggest sales staff.

What is Serotonin?

Let’s skip the first S in SSRI, the one that stands for selective, because there isn’t anything selective about it. Let’s move on to the second S, which stands for serotonin. Serotonin is know to be the happy neurotransmitter. The common understanding is that more of it leads to happiness and inversely, less of it leads to depression.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that relays messages from one neuron to another. It does this by skipping across the synapse and delivering it’s smile-evoking package to the next neuron up the chain. But rather than hang out in the synapse and ultimately break down, the serotonin molecule will be reabsorbed by the sending neuron. Why? Because a neurotransmitter is a huge molecule and extremely expensive for the body to produce. So it is reabsorbed so that it can be used again. The human body, in all it’s wisdom is a recycler. Its true.

Why SSRIs?

The mechanism of function for SSRI drugs is exactly what it says. It’s a re-uptake inhibitor. When the neuron naturally spits the serotonin into the synapse to transmit it’s happy message, it immediately grabs it back to be used again for more happy messages. When an SSRI is present, the binding sites of the neuron are blocked by the SSRI. This allows the serotonin to stay in the synapse longer and continue to deliver it’s happy message, over and over again.

The good news is that it works. The bad news is that your body has to produce more serotonin, but at a cost.

5-HTP Is the Answer

5-Hydroxytriptophan is not only the active blocker of the binding sites, but it is also a major pre-cursor to serotonin. An SSRI without a 5-HTP supplement is effective, but it will drain the body of energy in it’s attempts to replace the serotonin being degenerated if it’s not being recycled.

The addition to of 5-HTP will not only reinforce the effects of your SSRI, but it’s likely that you can get by on just 5-HTP alone.

ZZzz-Time All Narual Sleep Aid with 5-HTP

A majority of the bio-chemical reactions that take place in your body, happen while you’re sleeping. This is why it’s important to fuel those reactions with everything your body needs to wake up feeling relaxed and refreshed. In addition to 5-HTP, ZZzz-Time also has hops, passion flower and rhodesia. All are natural substances widely agreed to increase serotonin production.

The Happy Ingredients in ZZzz-Time

  1. 5-HTP – We’ve already discussed this a bit, but we’ll do it again because it’s a very important molecule in the brain. If you’re currently taking an SSRI, 5-HTP will act as a compliment by providing the building blocks of more serotonin, allowing you to efficiently produce more. IF you’re NOT currently taking an SSRI, it will serve as an all-natural mood support by, again, providing the building blocks to serotonin.

  2. Hops – Alcohol isn’t the only thing in beer that help relax you. For years, hops have been used as a natural remedy for relaxation. According to the American Botanical Council (ABC), the grain has been used by Native American and Ayervedic healers to treat insomnia and nervous problems with no known side-effects.

  3. Passion Flower – Passion flower is a native plant of North America. It has been used for centuries as a mild sedative. It was later used in Europe and adopted by herbalists to treat insomnia, hysteria and epilepsy, and is also used as a pain-killer.

  4. Rhodiola Rosea – Rhodiola Rosea is what is know as an “adaptogen.” It helps the body adapt to and resist physical, chemical, and environmental stress. Rhodiola Rosea is also used to improve libido and sexual function. Need I say more?

In summary, I’m very, very proud of this product. I worked hand in hand with my nutritionist to create and bring it to market for you. The 5-HTP supplement alone would cost you over $20.

In addition to the mood enhancement properties mentioned above, you also get the all-natural sleep aid ingredients including melatonin, L-Tryptophan, and L-Theanine.

Recommendations for Use

Take one tablet per night and on nights when you know sleep might be difficult to come by, then double up and take two. In regard to 5-HTP use, it’s important to be consistent in supplementing this. It has a cumulative effect so it’s important to take it daily. You’ll notice the effects on your sleep immediately, but it can 2 weeks to a month to begin to feel the mood enhancing effects of the 5-HTP.

Order yours today! Let’s get happy.
