Every smoker knows they should quit. But for those who smoke, they know that smoking is something to look forward to; perhaps more than almost anything else, a cigarette is thought about first thing in the morning, on a lunch break, in the car, and even before you call it a night.

Mark Twain said, “Quitting smoking is easy. I’ve done it a thousand times.” Maybe you’ve tried to quit, too. Why is quitting and staying quit hard for so many people? The answer is nicotine.

Nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs known to human kind, I believe that force of habit may actually be the more powerful reason that quitting is so hard. Once the habit is ingrained, facing the thought of quitting seems about as torturous as having bamboo shoots driven under your fingernails!

If you really want to quit, there is only one real way to succeed; you have to make up your mind that you are going to quit and then take action. It’s really that simple. Sure, we are here to help you, we offer many support systems with our auriculotherapy program, but without the will to quit… you will not succeed.

This may be one of the most difficult decisions you ever make, but you have to keep in mind that you are doing this for yourself, to create a better you, and this is the 1st day of the rest of your life.

Ways to Help Make the Decision to Quit Smoking

Every smoker is different, but for some a good starting place is to actually write down, in vivid detail, all the reasons you want to quit smoking; to feel better, get more dates, save money, etc. Write them on post-it notes and stick them up all over the house. Start thinking about your reasons, and every time you light up a cigarette remind yourself of at least one reason. Start practicing this exercise now, and continue throughout your cessation.

Set a Date to Quit Smoking

Pick a date to quit. It could be the 1st day of the week, or the 1st day of the next month, whatever works. But set the date according to your smoking habits, for example don’t select your quit date right before your trip to Vegas, please give yourself a fighting chance! Then once you’ve selected your date to quit, stay commited. Smoke up until then, but once you get to the committed date, there can be no turning back if you really want to quit.

Redirect Your Need to Smoke

Redirection is one of the most effective ways to quit; ask anyone who has succeeded and they will probably tell you that once they quit smoking, they found something else to focus their attention on … hopefully more, not less healthy. It would not be good to quit smoking and start, say, drinking heavily or eating a lot more.

Pick something like exercise, chewing gum or a new hobby to help redirect your attention. Forming a new habit will help you avoid falling back into the old smoking habit. One creative way of working through breaking the habitual hand-to-mouth sensation is to cut 1/4 of a straw, and breathe through it, as if it were a cigarette. This will help you through your “nicotine fits,” and will help your practice deep breathing to calm the physical withdrawal symptoms, and some find that the fresh clean air intake is very satisfying.

Dealing with Nicotine Withdrawal

Most smokers who are determined to quit underestimate the challenges of nicotine withdrawal. The Auriculotherapy program we offer here at InsideOut Wellness will help you throughout this phase of withdrawal. This form of acupuncture will calm the physical withdrawal symptoms of nicotine.

Withdrawal symptoms can include any of the following:

Dizziness (which may only last 1 to 2 days after quitting)

Depression

Feelings of frustration, impatience, and anger

Anxiety

Irritability

Sleep disturbances, including having trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, and having bad dreams or even nightmares

Trouble concentrating

Restlessness or boredom

Headaches

Tiredness

Increased appetite

Weight gain

Constipation and gas

Cough, dry mouth, sore throat, and nasal drip

Chest tightness

This Auriculotherapy program consists of an unlimited number of visits within 45 days of your first treatment.

Resist Triggers to Start Smoking Again

Here’s the scenario most who smoke have already faced before: You are determine to quit and you do actually quit for some period of time; a day, a week, a month or even several years. And then it happens; you have a bad day or break up a relationship, lose your job, a friend or loved one dies, etc.

And you tell yourself, just one, that’s it; I gotta’ have a smoke, but just one and that’s it. But it rarely ever is; once a smoker, always a smoker! All it takes is succumbing to the desire in your weakest moment and you are likely to relapse before you even know what happened.

The truth of the matter is that relapses will happen. In the case it does, write down what triggered you to start smoking again and get back on the horse. Regain you focus that you are doing this to create a better you!

Smoking Cessation a Day at a Time

Relapse is actually very common. Probably for every ten smokers who quit, only one of them goes successfully and never relapses. How you deal with it if and when it happens to you can make all the difference. If you get down on yourself about a relapse and tell yourself you just can’t do it, then that’s probably going to be your own truth. You feel ashamed, like you are a loser who just doesn’t have the self determination and wherewithal to quit.

But if you can accept that you are only human and prone to make mistakes, you can pick yourself up again and quit, even if you relapse several times. There is no shame in suffering a relapse; it’s actually very natural and happens to many smokers who quit.

The main thing to remember is what I started off with; only you can decide to quit and, if you have a relapse, only you can decide to start over again. The only thing that really matters is not giving up on your commitment to quit. Take it a day at a time but don’t ever stop trying to quit and stay that way.

Is the reason for this the fact that we live in an artificial society?

We are the most overfed undernourished country in the world. Could this be caused by our standard American diet (SAD)? Could it be caused by our tendency to gobble down FAST FOODS on the run? Could it be the bad habits we learn at a young age at home which is reinforced by friends, school, and TV causing a life long struggle of weight loss, diabetes, and heart disease? How can you can eat 4000 calories a day and still be starving?

Almost two thirds of American adults are now considered to be overweight or obese. In some states 40% of the children are overweight. There is a direct correlation between obesity and type II diabetes which eventually may lead to the number one cause of death in the United states-heart disease.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS NO ANSWER to this and many health care providers does not address this even though it is probably causing the biggest healthcare crisis of our time. Researchers are feverishly searching for magic drugs or wayward genes to profitably correct this epidemic. Food scientists are constantly coming up with innovative ways to create artificial foods that taste good, but have no nutritional value such as fake sweeteners, trans fatty acids, genetically modified fruits and vegetables, and farm fish. Preservatives, colors, boxes, and creative marketing create a demand to buy and eat such stuff.

If we eat snack foods that add 500 naked calories every day, what does that do to our health?

Junk food additives cause junk food addictions. Junk food addictions cause junk food diseases.

High sugar, starchy diets, lack of exercise, legal and illegal drugs, turn our normal metabolic processes upside down adversely effecting numerous organ systems in the body including the kidneys, liver, pancreas, adrenal glands, pituitary, thyroid, hypothalamus, digestive tract, heart, and others. The results include high blood pressure, oxidative stress, inflammation, tumors, mood disorders, accelerated aging, and others.

Nutrient poor foods lead to nutrient poor diet fads lead to nutrient deficiencies lead to nutrient diseases.

I guess everybody knows by now that the most popular cosmetic procedure we practice here is the Microcurrent Facelift. Our clients have achieved great results with this procedure, and I really enjoy observing my clients gradual transformation throughout their series of treatments. One of my most memorable clients came in to me after seeing a morning show segment on Fox 2 with Tim Ezell. When I was approached by Fox 2 about doing this morning segment, I was excited to introduce this advanced technology, and our new methods of non-invasive cosmetic procedures to St.Louis. That Day after the live segment aired, the office received many phone calls inquiring about this “Microcurrent Facelift procedure that everyone saw on T.V.” They wanted to know what it was, how it worked, where it came from, and what results they could achieve. One particular caller was brought to my attention right away. She said that her daughter saw the show, and noticed that I had mentioned that this treatment was effective for people who had been suffering from bell’s palsy, which is paralysis of the face resulting from stroke or even some viruses. After consulting this patient, I informed her that I planned to work on just the one side of her face that drooped. I estimated that it would take 10 sessions, to lift the left side of her face to the point where it would be symmetrical with the right side of her face. We got started with the procedure right away. She had been living with bell’s palsy for the past five years, and had significant atrophy. After a single treatment, she said that her face felt ”alive.” After her 7th session, my office manager was shocked at her. She said that her face was “flawless.” I made a point of examining her, at her next session and it was true. Within 7 sessions the left side of her face had perked up, and was completely symmetrical to the right side of her face. I just like to share this story because it not only illustrates the cosmetic benefits, but the therapeutic benefits as well. Eight of the 14 acupuncture meridians bisect the face. Microcurrent is also know as needle-less acupucnture, so in a single procedure, we’re treating several different acupuncture points. I’ve also found that it’s beneficial in treating migraines, sinus infections and allergies. So give it a try, the results can be life changing.

I was recently sent the PDF of the Karen Deer article that appeared on the front page of the Lifestyle section of the Post. Since the article ran, we’ve been doing about 12 to 16 microcurrent procedures per day and getting excellent results. Several patients have completed their 12 session protocol and have moved on to the monthly maintenance phase. The PDF version contains high resolution before and after photos which accentuate Karen’s results much better than the grainy quality of the news paper photos. Look specifically around her mouth. The vertical lines surrounding her mouth are considerably thinner. Her neck is significantly more toned and her cheeks and jowls are also much improved. Also look at the lateral aspects of her eyes lids and how much they have been lifted. This was after only 10 treatments. Karen has been in 4 times since and continues to get great results. If you’re considering a cosmetic procedure, this is where to start. It’s affordable, completely non-invasive, and in fact, quite therapeutic. Microcurrent is also known as needleless acupuncture. Eight of the 14 acupuncture meridians bisect the face, so in a single session, we’re treating all those points. Many patients have reported improvements in sinus infections, migraine headaches and better sleep. If you have any questions, please call the office or download our FAQ packet.

I have to agree with the article here. I have several friends that have graduated from med school in the last 10 years that have no problem referring patients to me. In fact, some of them are patients. I’m not sure why the older docs are more skeptical, but even they have changed their views. If you’re someone that is scared of chiropractic, don’t be. The chiropractic adjustment is one of the greatest tools in all of medicine. Look at it this way… Muscle spasm causes pain, right? Pain causes inflammation… then inflammation causes more pain. Well what is essentially causing the pain? Is it the muscle? The job of a muscle is to contract, right? So when a muscle is in spasm and contracting uncontrollably and causing back pain, the muscle is performing its job. The problem is with the nerves that are communicating with the muscle and telling it to contract. So how do we fix it? We can take anti-inflammatory’s, but that won’t stop the muscle from spasming. Or, we can adjust the spine. By adjusting the appropriate spinal segment, proper neurological communication can be restored. This will allow the muscle to relax, the inflammation will dissipate and pain will be alleviated. Can you see the brilliance of chiropractic?
